Maacher Bajaar, Its a Fish Market Out There!

Maacher bajaar, Bengali for fish market is a way of life for people who love to get their catch for the day and bring home to their wives to cook.

Its a culture. Of waking up early in the morning and going to the local fish market to haggle with the fish monger and get the freshest fish for the missus to cook before the Bengali bhodrolok starts his day at work. Many Bengali men in small town India still prefer to start their days with a generous serving of rice and maacher jhol (runny fish curry) over a grilled sandwich. And why not!

Here are some photographs of how a typical maacher bajaar in India looks like. And if you are lucky, you will even find a sly little cat pretending to be a watchdog!

when i was very small, baba used to to 'maacher bajar' early in the morning. ma used to wait anxiously for the 'bajar', because she had to cook within 9 o'clock in the morning, before baba would start his day with maacher jhol, daal ,tarkari, n bhaat. gone are those days.. :)
